Meet the Summit Speaker: Jenny Halasz of JLH Marketing

We had the opportunity to interview several of our highly anticipated speakers for the 2017 MnSearch Summit. Keep reading to learn more about Jenny’s career advice, her interest in VR and voice search, and her belief in the healing powers of orange juice!

1. What are you most excited about for the MnSearch Summit?

I have heard that this is the “State of Search of the north” so I know I’ll find great content, amazing speakers, and lots of fun. I am excited to hang out with my search friends and learn some new tricks!

2. What career advice could you offer for fellow digital marketers?

Specialize. Figure out what element of search you do best and do that. Knowing what you don’t know and when to ask for help is just as important as doing what you specialize in well. Don’t take on projects or clients that you don’t like, and make sure to balance your work time with having a life. Just because search is 24/7 doesn’t mean you have to be.

3. What advancement in technology are you most excited about in the near future?

I am very interested in how VR and voice search are already changing our world. I truly believe that some day we will search without typing at all.

4. Besides digital marketing, what is one topic of discussion that you could talk about for hours on end?

Politics. I’m completely fascinated by the psychographic targeting and psychological marketing that is used, along with the dynamics of fake news, social profiling, and PR spin.

5. What is one mistake that you still see marketers making in 2017?

Worrying about exact match keywords. If you have a keyword like “car”, I promise you that Google knows that’s the same as an auto, automobile, vehicle… and they also know it’s similar to truck, SUV, sport utility… it’s like that joke about an SEO that walks into a bar, bars, pub, public house, Irish pub, drinks, beer…. Focus on the topics instead.

6. Which digital marketing tool, could you not live without?

Screaming Frog, hands down. There are a lot of others that I like and use a lot, but I use Screaming Frog multiple times a day, every day. Sometimes when I’m just waiting on hold with someone like the insurance company, I’ll crawl their site for fun. I know, I need to get out more.

7. At happy hour, what is your go-to drink?

Depends on my mood – Stella if I want a beer, usually vodka and orange juice if I want a liquor drink. I have convinced myself that the orange juice in my screwdriver habit keeps me from getting sick when I travel.

8. Bonus: What is your all-time favorite gif?

I’m not really cool enough to have a favorite gif, but if I did, it would probably be something from the Simpsons. Maybe this one:
