Meet the Summit Speaker: Christi Olson of Bing

We had the opportunity to interview several of our highly anticipated speakers for the 2017 MnSearch Summit. Keep reading to learn more about Christi’s views on the mistakes she is still seeing marketers make today, her interest in pole vaulting, and her all time favorite gif!

1. What are you most excited about for the MnSearch Summit?

There are so many amazing speakers at MN Search and I’m excited to learn from them — each speaker will be bringing a plethora of actionable knowledge that we can take back and implement in our digital marketing strategies and I’m excited to see what new things we’ll learn.


2. What career advice could you offer for fellow digital marketers?

While it’s great to be an expert in a single area within digital marketing, don’t silo your knowledge to only ONE aspect of digital. Marketers today need to broaden their knowledge across channels and understand how the channels interact with each other and how to create more holistic strategies.

3. What advancement in technology are you most excited about in the near future?

AI and machine learning and the impact that it will have on marketing. Many marketers get lost in the weeds doing repetitive tactical projects – I’m excited for machine learning to help us with automation and getting us out of the tactical weeds so we can focus on strategic elements of our marketing campaigns.

4. Besides digital marketing, what is one topic of discussion that you could talk about for hours on end?

Before I had my son Roy in May of 2016, I could ramble on and on and on about pole vault and my love of running, as well as the wide variety of beers brewed between Oregon and Washington; however, my go-to topic is now Roy. He’s just so adorable, that I can’t not talk about him and how much he is growing and developing. I mean, just last night he took his first unaided steps. How cool is that?

5. What is one mistake that you still see marketers making in 2017?

There are two common mistakes I see that both tie back to not paying attention to the details. The first is I see marketers copy their Google accounts into Bing and not update make any updates to their settings. There are a handful of settings in Bing that differ from Google and need to be updated as outlined by Purna Virji, Sr Client Training Manager for Bing Ads. The second mistake I see is marketers not paying attention and making simple mistakes, like copying campaigns and forgetting to remove negatives or location targeting, misspellings in ad copy, activating Christmas ad copy in June. Auditing your accounts regularly and checking settings will help you find these mistakes and fix them before they become a huge problem.

6. Which digital marketing tool, could you not live without?

To me, it’s still Excel. I live and breathe in Excel and love that I can use Bing Ads Intelligence to access and update my accounts directly through Excel.

7. At happy hour, what is your go-to drink?

I’m a beer gal. In Spring and Summer I love a Weiss Bier with banana and clove undertones and in the Fall and Winter, I love Porters and Stouts with coffee, whiskey, and chocolate undertones!

8. Bonus: What is your all-time favorite gif?

It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time!
