2016 MnSearch Summit Speaker Series: An Interview with Larry Kim of WordStream

Larry Kim

We had the opportunity to interview several of our highly anticipated speakers for this year’s MnSearch Summit. Keep reading to learn more about Larry, his love for #PPCkid and his all-time favorite gif!

1. What are you most excited about for the 2016 MnSearch Summit?

I’m excited to hear both Wil Reynolds and Rand Fishkin give their keynotes! They’re both incredibly smart and innovative, and as a business owner and entrepreneur, Rand is one of the guys I’ve always looked up to.

2. What one piece of career advice would you offer for digital marketers?

It’s really difficult to say anything meaningful in just one piece of advice, but I think the greatest thing successful digital marketers have going for them is that they don’t try to be everything to everyone. Instead, focus on building a great team. Get everyone doing what they enjoy and are best at, because there are so many facets of digital marketing now and so many powerful tools that you need every piece firing on all cylinders to make an impact.

3. What advancement in technology are you most excited about in the near future?

The convergence of mobile marketing and the Internet of Things. Not too far off in the future, our homes, our cars, our furniture — these inanimate objects around us will be able to answer various needs for us. It’s going to be an insane arena for advertisers and we’re really just on the cusp of realizing the possibilities. Imagine not only being able to bid on social, mobile or web with your PPC campaigns, but on all of these other real-world devices people interact with on a daily basis. It’s going to be insane!

4. Besides digital marketing, what is one topic of discussion that you could talk about for hours on end?

#PPCkid. Hands down the coolest thing I’ve ever helped create.

5. What is one mistake that you still see marketers making in 2016?

Being lazy with their PPC accounts and overpaying for clicks. Quality Score has a huge impact on your ad placement and costs per click, but most marketers fail to focus here and then wonder why their performance is just so-so and ROI is stagnant. It’s not only on Google, either — Facebook has their own version of QS, as does Twitter. Get creative with your ads, clean up your landing pages, and make QS one of your key metrics. If this isn’t a priority for you, you’re probably paying too much for the clicks you do get on your crappy ads. So stop that!

6. What one digital marketing tool could you not live without?

BuzzSumo. I’ve used it for years and use it almost every day, and there aren’t a lot of tools I can say that about. It’s helped me win some massive successes in content promotion and online PR.

7. Bonus: What is your all-time favorite gif?

This one is pretty amazing… deep space, a hip cat and a giant pizza. What’s not to love?
